Third Sunday of Lent: Recognising Our Thirst

St. Francis de Sales often taught that God works gently in the soul. He wrote that “God’s love for us is patient and tender; He leads us little by little according to our strength.”

Like the Samaritan woman, we may arrive at the well with confusion or burdens, but Christ does not overwhelm us. He begins with simple conversation and slowly opens our hearts to grace.

Holiness in the Ordinary

Another insight from St. Francis de Sales is that holiness grows in the ordinary moments of life. The Samaritan woman came for a daily task — drawing water — yet that ordinary moment became the place of transformation. In the same way, God meets us in our daily duties, conversations, and quiet prayers.

Our Thirst

This Sunday invites us to recognise our own thirst. Where do we seek satisfaction? What wells do we return to again and again? Jesus alone gives the living water that truly satisfies.

And once we encounter Him, we cannot keep the joy to ourselves. The Samaritan woman leaves her jar behind and runs to tell others about Jesus. A heart touched by Christ naturally becomes a witness.

May this Lent help us return to the well with honesty and humility. If we open our hearts, Christ will gently fill them with the living water of His grace.
