Sacraments

The seven sacraments are the foundation of the Christian life in the Catholic Church. Instituted by Christ and entrusted to the Church, they are the principal means by which the faithful receive the grace of God throughout every stage of life.

Through the sacraments, God’s grace touches us at life’s most significant moments: our birth into faith, our strengthening in the Spirit, our nourishment at the Lord’s table, our healing and reconciliation, our commitment to married life or ordained ministry, and the comfort we receive in times of serious illness.

“The seven sacraments touch all the stages and all the important moments of Christian life: they give birth and increase, healing and mission to the Christian’s life of faith.”

Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1210

The Three Groups of Sacraments

The Church organises the seven sacraments into three groups. The Sacraments of Initiation lay the foundations of the Christian life. The Sacraments of Healing bring God’s mercy and restoration. The Sacraments of Service are directed towards the salvation of others and the building up of the People of God.

Each sacrament page provides a clear introduction drawn from Sacred Scripture and the teaching of the Catechism. Where applicable, a request form is included so that parishioners and enquirers can begin the process of receiving a sacrament.
