St Joseph’s is the principal Catholic church in Aylesbury, serving the community since 1844. Situated in the heart of the town, it is a welcoming place of worship for parishioners, visitors, and those exploring the Catholic faith.
St Joseph’s
History
Christianity in Aylesbury dates to around the 7th century, with a Saxon church built by the 9th century. A Franciscan Friary was founded in 1386 near Rickfords Hill, housing approximately 60 monks at its peak before dissolution in 1536.
After the Reformation, Catholic activity remained dormant until 1843 when the Earl of Shrewsbury funded altar furniture for a mission dedicated to St Martin. The mission closed in 1857 but was re-established in 1888 when Bishop Riddell sent Fr James Collins to re-establish the Catholic presence in the town.
By 1892, a presbytery was built and the 120 Catholics then known in the area were able to worship in a temporary iron church which opened in December of that year. Fr Collins raised funds tirelessly through prayer leaflets and organised concerts to support the growing community.
Under Fr T.D. Walters (1926–1931) and Fr E. McHugh (1931 onwards), the parish expanded significantly. The foundation stone for a new permanent church was laid on 14th January 1937 by the Bishop. The building, designed by architects Pullan & Ronchetti and constructed by Webster & Cannon, was built for a capacity of 300 at a cost of £4,368. The church officially opened on 14th April 1937.
The Second World War brought evacuees and Italian prisoners of war to the parish. Post-war growth saw new Mass centres established across the area. Under Fr Kenneth Payne from 1975, Vatican II reforms were implemented and parishioners rallied together to repaint the entire church interior in just six days in May 1976.
The Catholic population grew from approximately 7 people in 1888 to roughly 2,800 by 1961, reflecting the remarkable growth of the parish community over the decades.
